Campus Ministry

About the Office of Campus Ministry

The Office of Campus Ministry provides spiritual programs and Christian service activities that enhance the Catholic character of the school. These programs and activities are designed to develop the abilities of Feehan students to serve and lead in our society and our church.

Main Goal

The Office of Campus Ministry ensures that the mission statement of Bishop Feehan High School becomes a lived reality in the lives of our students and faculty. Our mission statement challenges us to grow in our love and knowledge of the person of Jesus Christ, and to live lives of integrity and service. We continue to embrace this mission statement every day. Through Theology classes, Eucharistic Celebrations, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, peer ministry, service experiences and the retreat programs, students are truly educated in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ and His Church.

Gatherings

We gather as a school community for prayer and Eucharist to open the school year, Catholic Schools week, Holy Days and to end the school year. We are a sacramental community recognizing our need for prayer, community and Eucharist for our spiritual journey.

Retreats

We continue to offer our students nine retreats a year, which positively impacts our student body. Each retreat has the goal of further moving us from our head to our heart in our faith. The Campus Ministry student leaders facilitate the retreats and prayer services. During Lent and Advent, we will engage in a total school reconciliation service.

The Peer Ministry Program

The Peer Ministry program at Feehan is made up of over 400 students each semester who participate in a scripture study once a week that applies biblical principles to real life situations. Senior Campus Ministry officers, who share their faith and prayer life with their peers, teach these classes. They are excellent role models for the underclassmen and again, challenge their peers to move from their head to their heart in their faith life.

Retreat Requirement

All students must attend two school retreats as a graduation requirement. Each student attends a mandatory retreat during the freshman year. Thereafter students must choose an additional school sponsored retreat during the remaining three years.

Community Service

Students are required to engage in 20 hours of approved Christian Service per year during their freshman, sophomore, and junior years. During the senior year students will be required to submit a Christian Service portfolio. Both the service hours and portfolio are graduation requirements. The Office of Campus Ministry will provide detailed community service packets to all students detailing the service requirements. A service hour verification form is also available for download.

Bishop Feehan Mission Statement

Bishop Feehan High School is a Roman Catholic, regional, coeducation college preparatory, secondary school founded to form partnership with the families of the greater Attleboro area in educating young adults in the teachings of Jesus Christ and His church. Students are challenged to live lives of integrity and service. Our Catholic tradition is the integrating point of our religious, academic, and social lives.”

Is the Christian Service program required for graduation?

There is a 60 hour Christian service requirement for all students prior to graduation. This involves 20 hours per year for your freshman, sophomore and junior years. As a senior you will also be offered the Christian Leadership Service Course as an option for academic credit, and you are expected at this point to have embraced a lifestyle of service. Opportunities for reflection on your service experiences, and curriculum integration journaling will be offered through meetings with the Campus Minister.

What type of service must you do?

The Christian service program involves two types of service, direct and indirect.

Direct service hours are given when your volunteer work involves interaction with those in need. This would involve any service experience that causes you to be directly involved with the elderly, disabled, sick, poor, or youth. All of your hours may be direct, but in any case, half of them (30 hours) must be direct. Indirect service hours are given when you perform service that impacts the needy but does not involve direct client contact. You must complete at least 30 direct service hours to fulfill your graduation requirement.

Where should I go to volunteer?

Over the course of your freshman and sophomore years, we ask that a minimum of twenty hours be completed in service at Bishop Feehan High School, and an additional twenty hours be completed in service to your place of worship. Any additional hours, which can be accrued ahead, and hours that are completed in your junior year, can be completed in any one of the following categories: Bishop Feehan related, cultural, disability, civic, educational, elderly, environmental, non-profit fundraising, medical, poverty, religious, and youth. Campus Ministry will also post an ongoing list of service activities that are being offered both inside and outside of school.

May I receive credit for service hours required by other groups or for work in my parish?

Service learning hours for Bishop Feehan are NOT in addition to those required by the National Honor Societies, extra curricular activities, or parish confirmation classes. For example, the Office of Campus Ministry will accept 20 hours of service being done for the National Honor Society to fulfill its requirement. One set of twenty hours will fulfill both requirements.

Can I get service hours by helping individuals not connected to an agency?

For purposes of this requirement, assisting a family member or babysitting at home will not be accepted as service hours. Assisting a non-family member who is in need may be accepted, but must be pre-approved in advance of the service by the Office of Campus Ministry.

When do I perform these service hours?

These hours can be completed after school, on weekends, during vacation periods, and during the summer months. Many opportunities are also offered through the Campus Ministry Office, by extracurricular groups, and athletic teams.

At what pace must I complete my service hours? The hours listed below are cumulative.

Freshman year:              5 hours first quarter

                                       10 hours second quarter

                                       15 hours third quarter

                                       20 hours fourth quarter

Sophomore year:          25 hours first quarter

                                        30 hours second quarter

                                        35 hours third quarter

                                        40 hours fourth quarter

Junior year:                    45 hours first quarter

                                        50 hours second quarter

                                        55 hours third quarter

                                        60 hours fourth quarter

Senior year:                   Comprehensive Service Portfolio prepared for inclusion with college applications

                                        by December 15th.

You may complete your service hours at a faster pace if you so desire. All hours that go beyond your minimum requirement will be applied to subsequent semesters. Once you have completed all your hours you should continue to record and submit them to the Office of Campus Ministry for inclusion in your college portfolio.

How will I track and document my service hours?

All service hours will be tracked and documented on a form provided by the Office of Campus Ministry. This form can be downloaded above. If a site supervisor is not available to sign the forms your parent may sign them. You must turn these forms into the Office of Campus Ministry as soon as any one of the following conditions are met:

  • You complete your volunteer experience at that particular agency or event.
  • You run out of space on that form.
  • You come to the end of the semester and the deadline is due.
  • You have a different volunteer supervisor so a different form must be used for each volunteer supervisor.
